In October 2024, Israel bombed my great aunt’s house. Israel killed my great aunt along with 15 other members of her family in Jabalia.
Her body, or what remains of it, is still buried under the rubble.
Her name was Fatima. I used to call her “grandma” after my own grandmas died in 1999 and 2000.
Here is my poem to her:
She slept on her bed,
never woke up again
Her bed has become her grave,
a tomb beneath the ceiling of her room,
The ceiling a cenotaph,
No name, no year of birth,
No year of death, no epitaph.
Only blood
And a smashed picture frame in ruin next to her.
