Everyone here is now collapsing from hunger. Everyone has gone bankrupt under this unbearable inflation. That is even worse than what you would see in high-taxation countries. Yes, everyone, except for merchants, thieves, war profiteers, and those with liquid assets, who claim that they are also suffering like the others.
Today, right in front of me at the market, a so-described solid man was about to collapse. I rushed to him and held his head before it hit the ground. Only one young man gave me a hand, while the rest stood indifferent. I do not know if it was sheer numbness, lack of empathy, or just an attempt to escape the tragic scene which became normal.
After attempts to wake up the young man, I succeeded, however, he remained almost unconscious until we put a piece of candy in his mouth. It was something we bought from a vendor for fifteen “shekels” (almost $4). Strangely, when he finally regained consciousness, the only word he said was: Thank you. Then, leaning on me, he simply continued his way, as if he had not been almost dead a while ago.
I do not know what happened to this man! Why all that was going around him did not seem to matter. Not even his own life. Nevertheless, what I am almost sure of is that he was starving, felt defeated and broken from inside. He was carrying two loaves of bread and an empty bag with him and chose to stay silent in the face of such a cruel and unjust world.
