To My Dearest Sister, Yara |

To My Dearest Sister, Yara

I need not remember your birthday

As I have never forgotten it

My soul-sister

Your birthday is part of me

It blooms in my memory each year

However, I am just tired of elegies

You were my gift from God

A light that softened my loneliness

A joy which I waited for ten years

I remember very well that night

It was the greatest feast for me

I did not close my eyes

I was anticipating your arrival

As if you were the dawn that comes after a long night

You grew up on my hands

I watched the world growing in your eyes

I created worlds of love for you

We imagined our endless childhood together

In warmth and laughter

I promised to be your refuge and safety

Forgive me

I could not fulfill my promise to you

I shall no longer make promises

I did not fail you, Yara

But a silent war ambushed our dreams

A treacherous plane shattered your toys

Your notebooks

And our innocent evenings

Leaving me searching for you under the rubble

Looking for a small hand whose warmth I know

For eyes that brings me tranquility

For remains that a grave deserves

However, even a grave I was not able to offer you

My little one

To God belongs what He takes

To Him belongs what He gives

And I place you in His hands to safeguard you

But how can I bid farewell to someone who was all my home!

Goodbye dearest Yara

The kind-hearted and tender soul

Goodbye to you my unforgettable sorrow

June 30, 2009

Your birthday was a feast unlike any other

Today it has become a date of endless grief

That neither earth can narrow

Nor time can contain.
