To Refaat

Dear Refaat,

Today, I visited a strawberry farm for the first time in two years. I went for two reasons.

First, my children wanted to pick strawberries—just as they used to on their grandfather’s farm back in Gaza.

Second, I went because strawberry fields bring your memory rushing back to me.

With each berry I picked, I thought of you. I blessed your name, and I cursed those who murdered you—along with so many of my relatives and friends. I cursed all who have called, directly or silently, for the destruction of Gaza and its people.

You were dearly missed, dearest Refaat.

I just wish I could pick every strawberry in that field.
